Phrasal verbs
Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs. They are made up of two or three words; the combination of words takes on a completely different meaning to the verb part.
Examples
- Take up: ocupar tiempo The meeting took up a whole morning. - Take on: hacer algo extra She has taken on too much with a full-time job as well. - Take away: llevarse. She took the envelope away - Take over: tomar el control The army tried to take over the country.
Phrasal verbs
- Phrasal verbs are used mainly in informal situations such as spoken English and emails to friends or colleagues
- The meaning of some (a few) Phrasal (or phrasal) verbs such as FALL DOWN is obvious ; however, others (the majority) are almost like idioms, since their meaning is not literal.
- Phrasal verbs is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition or both.
Phrasal verbs
-The adverb or preposition is called a particle.
Verb: is a word that describes an action. Every sentence has to have a verb.
Preposition: is a small word that describes the relationship between two words. Prepositions usually deal with time, location/place, or direction/movement.
Adverb: is a word that describes a verb, an adjective or other adverbs.
Common Phrasal Verbs
- Call back = to return a phone call to someone Could I CALL you BACK in 5 minutes? - Call back = to ask someone to return. We will be CALLING BACK our friends in Paris - Deal with = to take action about something or someone. Don’t worry, I will DEAL WITH the broken down photocopier. - Fill in = to add something or to complete something I can only deal with your request once you have FILLED IN this P3 form. - Fill in = to act as a replacement for someone. Suzy sent Jack to FILL IN for her at the marketing meeting.

- Get up = rise from bed after sleeping. I got up and took a shower - wake up: to become aware of something; to realize something. It takes a serious crisis to wake people up. - Plug in: to connect a piece of electrical equipment. Is the printer plugged in? - Turn up: to increase the sound. of a piece of equipment. The music was turned up loud. - Turn down: to reduce the noise. Please turn the volume down. - Turn on/ switch on: to turn a light, machine, etc. off/on by pressing a button or switch
