Over the millennia Newcastle has had many identities. The earliest settlement ( Pons Aelius as it was known ) was a bridgehead of the Roman world, Hadrian’s Wall was the edge of an ancient empire Northern frontier was protected by three forts - Arbeia at South Shields, Segedunum at Wallsend and Pons Aelius on the high ground above the River Tyne in what was to become Newcastle landscape.

From its ship building and coal mining heritage, Newcastle has transformed itself into a leading cultural destination, renowned for being the business and social hub of the North East, the name originated during the Jacobites Rebellion of 1745. The Jacobites declared that Newcastle and the surrounding areas favoured the Hanovarian King George and were “for George”. Hence the name Geordie used as a derivation of George.

Imagine a bread bun but on an epic scale and you’ve got a good idea of what the stottie is all about. Typically measuring around 12 inches across and nearly two inches thick, the wonderfully stodgy bread derives its name from our local word ‘stott’ (meaning ‘to bounce’) and was so named because a stottie with optimal stodginess should bounce if you drop it.

The importance of pease pudding in Geordie cuisine cannot be underestimated. Usually made by boiling split yellow peas with a joint of ham before draining and mashing into a hummus-like paste, it’s a local foodstuff so beloved some even refer to it as ‘Geordie caviar’.

An article about Geordie cuisine wouldn’t be complete without mentioning trusty bakery chain Greggs. Established in Gosforth in 1951, the long-standing institution’s pasties, sausage rolls and steak bakes are a fast food staple in the North East. More recently Greggs has added fancy, progressive stuff to its menu like Fairtrade coffee and vegan sausage rolls. Whatever next!

Once an important coal port, the harbor area is now a busy passenger terminus for ferries and cruise ships to Europe, as well as for boat trips around the city The city owes its present name to William the Conqueror who, like Hadrian before him, recognized its strategic importance. In 1080, he gave his son the order to erect a "New Castle" on the site of the old Roman fort, in addition to the building of St. Nicholas' Cathedral.

The Quayside district around the Tyne and High Level Bridges has been redeveloped, and many of the old houses are now hotels, shops, and restaurants A fascinating underground tourist attraction is the 2.5-mile-long Victoria Tunnel, running beneath the city from the Town Moor down to the Tyne

North of Newcastle's High Level Bridge on St. Nicholas Street, the well-preserved Norman fortified tower bears testimony to the "New Castle" begun in 1080 and completed in 1172. The late Norman Chapel and the King's Chamber can be visited as you explore the castle's many old passages and medieval chambers. Along the way, you'll find fascinating displays of archaeological artifacts, while the tower offers excellent views over the city.
