General Precaution

• Learn the NFPA

• Perform hand hygiene before going in and out of the lab, and before and after contact with each patient, chemical, or equipment

• Eating, drinking, smoking, and applying cosmetics are strictly prohibited in work areas
• Wear appropriate PPE
• Compliance with applicable occupational safety and health regulations

Hazardous chemicals

• Proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals
• Consult material safety data sheets for specific instructions
• Use of emergency eyewash and showers
• Secure cylinders in a safe place

Infectious agents

• Treat all specimens as potentially infectious material
• Be wary of the different modes of transmission and wear complete and appropriate PPE
• Familiarize with the universal precautions found in activity exposure control plan
• Proper disposal of contaminated waste

Radioactive materials

• Observe for warning signs indicated in storage
• Follow correct procedures in SOP
• Read labels for essential information about safe handling and precautionary measures

Fire HAzard

• Ignitable and explosive materials must be properly handled and stored
• Familiarize with the location of fire extinguishers and fire blanket
• Make sure all electrical devices are in proper working order

Equipment handling

Operate with covers closed and properly latched Cover specimen tube with cap or paraffin seal Check temperature, pressure, and intake steam valve before use Loosen caps of containers Use autoclave tape Do not overload Always wash pipette after use Wash bulb that came in contact with fluid Mouth pipetting is extremely prohibited
