how did the geographical surroundings influence greek life?
ACTIVATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE
The Greeks inhabited the entire area of the Mediterranean Sea, although their territory was mainly concentrated in the Balkan Peninsula, located around the Aegan Sea. They called their territory HELLAS. It is possible that the mountainous geography of that area influenced the organization of their society. Although they had different Poleis, all of them felt they were part of a cultural community, which was united by their language and religion.
How theIr geograPhy Influenced theIr lIfes?
It must have been very difficult to cross those mountains. This picture shows some geographical characteristics of the main territory that the Greeks occupied, the Balkan Peninsula. This area contained the highest number of city-states (polis), each city had its own government, law and a god to protect it.
Is surrounded by water, which allowed the GreeKs to become great navigators. Traveling by the sea was easy because wherever they went, they found coast.
the balkan penInsula
The crew was familiar with the currents, the winds, and the best month of navigation (from May to September). To orient themselves at night, they look for the atars in the sky (especially the North Star), and by day, the coatline guided them.
"My name is Aetos. I am a trader and I was born In the cIty of MIletus. The gods decIded that my deetsiny would be to wander throughout Greece, leadIng me to vIsIt dIfferent cItIes. I have traveled by sea and over mountains, through rainy winters and hot summers. Alexandros, my good friend, always accompanies me on my trips, and together we have explored even beyond the regions that are inhabited by the greeks. The most difficult part is travelling across the tall mountains and low valleys during the winter, when it is cold and rainy. In summer, the wamr days return, making the plants to flower. I prefer traveling by the sea tnah by land. The sea has allowed me to meet Greeks who live in the hundreds of islands around the continent and even others who live away".
