Assessing, testing, evaluating... why?

  • To check students' understanding.
  • To give students, parents and school authorities a clear report on the students´ progress.
  • To help students identify their weaknesses and improve their performance.
  • To monitor teachers performance in the teaching-learning process.

What´s the difference between assessment, evaluation and testing?

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is the process of collecting information about students using different methods or tools so that educators can form an idea of what they know and can do with this knowledge. (e.g. tests, quizzes, portfolios, etc).

TESTING

A test refers to a tool, technique or a method that is intended to measure students knowledge or their ability to complete a particular task. In this sense, testing can be considered as a form of assessment. Tests should meet some basic requirements, such as validity and reliability.
