There is no tree more astute, intelligent and fanciful than the mangrove. Almost arrogantly he decides which shoot becomes a branch or a root. And once the challenges of gravity, rain and winds are overcome, he heads vertically and swiftly to exercise the lungs of the Gulf.

1. WHAT IS THE MANGROVE?

Mangroves are natural environments, with an abundance of shrubs and trees, which are born from the contact between the terrestrial and marine environmentsMangroves form ecosystems that function as purifying filters for water and air. Thus, they become valuable environments to create small green lungs.

MANGROVE IN ECUADOR

Ecuador has mangroves in the coastal area, in the Galapagos Islands and in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas and El Oro. As they are sources of reproduction and feeding of various kinds of fish, crustaceans and mollusks, they are essential for the economy of local communities.

2.contamination

The pollution is putting mangroves in danger. Other practices such as logging, indiscriminate fishing or the introduction of exotic species, among others, are making those who live off them, gravely fear for their future.

Endangered Mangroves

In sediment from the provinces of Guayas, El Oro and Manabí, where it is evident that there is greater contamination in the province of Guayas, especially in the Estero Salado and in the Churute Mangrove Reserve. For the province of Esmeraldas, no data were available, so it is recommended to carry out investigations in the estuaries of the Esmeraldas and Atacames rivers.

environmental solution

  • Stop the felling of mangroves, through actions of forest control, legalization of land and territorial ordering.
  • Carry out awareness campaigns through government entities.
  • Promote recycling and garbage collection in mangroves.
