Student Handbook

Student Code of Conduct

This 7 page Student Handbook contains what every new student needs to know, including information on support services, fees and withdrawals, and online systems support

You must follow good academic practice in your assessments: your assessment answers must be in your own words and you must provide references for your source material. More information will be provided.

  • This outlines the expected standard of behaviour for students
  • You have both rights and responsibilities as a student
  • Your course is offered as blended learning. This means it is a requirement of your study for you to attend 2-3 business days (Monday-Friday) on one of the North Metro TAFE campuses (Midland, Joondalup or Leederville) each semester/stage. These dates are determined by your lecturer and cannot be changed.
  • We know most students studying online are doing so because they have other commitments like work and caring responsibilities. We advise students at the beginning of each semester/stage of study of the dates they are required on campus so they can arrange time off work, alternative caring arrangements, etc.
  • We cannot alter the dates of the practical demonstrations and if you miss a date due to medical issues or other unavoidable life issues that fit the deferred assessment criteria, it may take a long time (up to six months) to reschedule the date due to the nature of certain assessments.
  • Practicals are an amazing way to learn how to work with people. Students consistently say in person practical demonstrations are a key part of their learning during this course.

Know who to ask for help

Have the right tools

Make a study schedule

  • You need to set aside time to study from Week 1. Schedule this into your calendar like you would a class you attend in person
  • Try the Pomodoro technique or other study techniques
  • Your lecturer should be your first point of contact. No question is too small or too big.
  • Check out the support services NM TAFE offers, including Student/Disability Support
  • You will need an up to date computer or laptop and a high-speed internet connection to successfully study online
  • You need to get to know Microsoft Office 365 and Blackboard

Attend virtual classroom events

Have a back up plan

Have a support team

Tips for successful study onlineAdapted from TAFE Queensland

  • Most online students say the virtual classroom events (known as Collaborate) are the best part of learning.
  • If you can't attend live, make sure you listen to the recordings.
  • Get your friends and family on board to support you during your study, whether it's a kind word, a cooked meal or a few hours babysitting.
  • When things don't go as planned, you need a back up plan!
  • Talk to your lecturer if you have concerns about your study load or assessment submission

Volunteer Work

20 hours in Stage 2

  • You are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours as a volunteer as a part of your course of study.
  • You may be able to use your current workplace or volunteer job.
  • Your lecturer will give more information about this in Stage 2.

VOLUNTEER WORK

In Stage 2 of study you will complete 20 hours of volunteer work
