Introduction to coaching
Practical exercises on using coaching tools
LISTEN to a colleague for 3 minutes
At what level are you listening?
Do we really listen to what other people say?
Brain
Some knowledge about the brain will help you understand the basic human patterns of reaction in conversations. In other words, people react differently to what is said in the same situation.
Body Language Expert Keynote Mark Bowden at TEDx Toronto (watch up to 11:56)
The emotional brain
The reptilian brain
The conscious brain
It is concerned with processing memories and emotions. The signals from the emotional brain are more or less mixed with your earlier experiences. This means that the context you are in at the moment and your previous experiences in similar situations are mixed.
Helps your body with autonomic functions, such as breathing. These reactions have helped us survive as humans. In everyday life, the reptilian brain can make us do things without thinking that we regret afterwards.
When we want to behave differently, we train and learn with our conscious brain to create new patterns. The brain is plastic. We can change old habits, the way we think.

Feedback in coaching

Feedback in coaching
You describe what you have observed in the conversation and check for clarity. Always use the participant’s own words. Do not rephrase the meaning in your own words.

Designed to reduce any influence from the coach’s beliefs and avoid using the coach’s own vocabulary. Listen, ask CQ, listen, ask CQ ...
Let's try this. One person talks about her/his biggest problem in teaching, the other gives coaching feedback.
- When you say that you are angry about the manager’s decision to give you fewer hours next term, I can hear that you want to change the situation. Say more, please.
- You describe teaching online as a black box? What kind of a black box is that?
- You talk about feeling insecure and raising your hand in class. What is the relation between feeling insecure and raising your hand?
