listening situations

During your time in the business school, you are going to come across situations that require listening - not just in lectures. In the previous unit, you listened to advice on key listening strategies, but think about the following situations:

  • Group project work
  • Stimulus from video content in class
  • Interviews for placement year
  • Group study sessions in the library

The image above shows a group posed for a photograph. They're all listening, right? Wrong! Consider the following:

  • Do they understand the presenter?
  • Are they all from the same country and culture?
  • Are they concentrating on everything being said?
  • Do they agree?
  • Do they interpret the information in the same way?
  • Is the information on each individual's priority list?
  • Where do they go from here, and who decides?
We cannot answer these questions simply by looking at the photograph. Bearing in mind these questions, check out the following video "How Miscommunication Happens" to learn more.
