Travelling

Vocabulary + functional language

At the airport

Terminal

the facility at an airport that is divided into an arrival lounge (=arrivals) and a departure lounge (departures). A lounge is a waiting room.

DEPARTURE

arrival

it refers to an outgoing flight or in other words, a plane that is about to take off. Arrival and departure are used a lot in airport vocabulary (e.g. loudspeaker announcement, when asking for information). Example of a loudspeaker announcement at an airport: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is an announcement that flight 430 to San Francisco has been delayed. Your new departure time is 4:55.”

it refers to an incoming flight, meaning a plane that is about to land.

At the airport

flight information monitor:

an important source of information at the airport. It shows flight times and if a flight is on time, boarding, closed or delayed.

BOARD (V)

to enter the plane. If a flight is boarding, it means you have to make it in time into the plane. Example of a loadspeaker announcement: "Flight 358 with service to Los Angeles will now begin boarding." if it says closed, it means you got to the gate too late and boarding has finished. In other words, you missed your flight. However, before the gate closes, you will receive a special call through the loudspeaker. Example: “Attention, passengers X and Y, please report to Gate 32 immediately.” If your flight is delayed, it means it’s late, maybe because of bad weather. Example: Ladies and gentlemen, Hawaian Star Airlines flight 358 to Los Angeles will now be delayed approximately three hours.

Luggage check-in:

When you get to an airport one of the first things you’ll need to do is to check your luggages. This means that you give your bags to the staff of the airline so that they take it and put it into the storage area of the airplane (known as the hull). Your bag will placed safely below deck with the other luggage. The opposite to checked luggage is your carry-on luggage which is smaller luggage that you take into the airplane. You put your carry on luggage in the overhead bin of the plane. Many times, passengers want to take big suitcases as a carry-on, but that’s not allowed. If you have a suitcase that is big, you better check it in or you’ll have problems. Luggage: Carry-on. Are we limited to two carry-ons? You’ve got to check your bag Don’t you think I can maybe carry it on? excess baggage charges (money that you pay if your baggage is overweight)

At the airport

baggage claim:

area where you collect your luggage.

On the airplane

On the airplane you can have window seats, middle seats or aisle seats. The identification of a seat may be made up of a number and a letter. A seat is bathroom adjacent: close or next to the bathroom. Economy class: cheaper seats. First class or business class: here you will receive VIP treatment. At the airport before boarding VIP passengers have a VIP lounge, which is an are where they can rest, eat, and work before their flight. They also get special treatment like priority boarding (= they can get to board ahead of other passengers). Upgrade from economy to first class.I was wondering if we could get an upgrade because I have miles. Turbulence: to experience turbulence. If your flight flights over mountains or through a storm, you’re going to experience turbulence or a bumpy flight. During take-off and landing, you have to - fasten your seatbelt Stow (=put away) your seat table Raise your window blind Move your seat back to the upright position. During the flight you can recline your seat and lay back. Stow your luggage in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you. Problems during the flight: you might you don’t have something you need (e.g. a blanket or a pillow) you could get the wrong meal you might need to change seats because the person next to you is snoring loudly

Direct flight vs connecting flight

Direct flight: When you fly, if you are lucky, you will get a direct or non-stop flight to your destination, which means that you fly from point A to point B without stopping. A layover means that you take more than one flight to your destination. For example, if you travel to Miami, you could have a layover in Houston. Example: we are on four flights with three layovers. Two of these layovers are 6 hours each. Can’t we just take a direct flight? Connecting flight: there is a connecting flight through Dallas that leaves in five minutes. You can catch it if you hurry. Dallas is just where you make your connection. Make your way over gate 32. You’re connecting in Dallas to Turks and Caicos

Journey vs Trip

Journey: the act of going from one place to another, especially over a long distance. Journey gets a more poetic and metaphorical use. Example: your English learning journey or spiritual journey. You can refer to the year you spent in the US as a journey. It’s a 1200 kilometer journey from one place to the other. Trip: If you went to the US for 10 days, you’ll talk about it as a trip. A trip to Colombia We are going on a trip today. My family took a trip to Florida when I was a child. Have a safe trip. She’s on a business trip to China. Travel can be a verb or a noun. Examples: She travelled around the world (verb) You travelled across the entire country (verb) I’m not a big fan of travel (noun) Are you travelling soon? (are you going on a trip?) Sometimes you realize the journey you have been taking has reached its final stop.

Questions that will likely be asked:

Where are you flying today? Have you checked in online already? Can I have your passport? Do you need a paper copy of your online pass? Do you have any bags to check in? Do you have any seating preference?

Passengers might have questions of their own:

Could I change my seat? Can you confirm that I have a vegetarian meal? Do you have any seats in the exist row (they have more legroom so they are often more comfortable)?

Dealing with problems at the check in

Case 1: baggage overweight Check in: I’m sorry madam, but this bag is overweight. The limit is 23 kilos. You either need to take some things out or pay for the excess. Woman: How much is the excess? check in: It’s 50 euros for a bag of up to 32 kilos. Woman: That’s expensive. I’ll try to take some things out. Case 2: flight delay Check in: I’m sorry but the flight is delayed for up to 2 hours. Woman: So, when do you expect the plane to leave? check in: Now we expect it to depart at 3:30 pm. I do apologize for the inconvenience. Woman: Well, I guess there’s nothing we can do. check in: Thank you for your patience. You can check the departure board for updated boarding time and flight information.

What’s the next available flight? check in:Let me see what we can do. We do have a flight leaving tomorrow morning that I can switch you to. Woman: What time in the morning? check in:It leaves here at 7 am and arrives at 10 am. Woman: That’ll be fine. check in:Here’s a printed confirmation and again I’m really sorry for the trouble. Woman: That’s OK. It’s not your fault. Are there any hotels near the airport? check in:yes, of course. if you go to the customer’s service desk, just over there. You can claim a voucher for a hotel and meals. Woman: Excellent. Thank you. check in:You’re welcome.

Going through security

Dialogue 1

Officer: Is this your bag, sir? Man: Yes, it is. Officer: We need to search it. Do you have any liquids. Man: No probably. No, I don’t think so. Officer: I’m afraid we’ll need to take this bottle. You’re allowed containers of up to 100 milliliters maximum. Man: Sorry. I completely forgot. Officer: And this Swiss knife has to go too . Man: But, it’s important to me. Officer: Either I take it or you’ll have to go back and check this bag. Man: Well. I don’t have time for that. I guess, you’ll have to take it. Officer: Very well sir. Here’s your bag. Man: Thanks.

Dialogue 2

Woman: Excuse me. I’m really late for my flight. Can I go to the front of the line? Security officer: OK. Come forward quickly. Make sure everything is out of your pockets and please place laptops in a separate tray. Please, step over this way, madam. Stand on the marks on the floor and place your hands above you. Do you have anything in the pockets. Woman: Yes, sorry. I still have some money and my keys. Security officer: Please, put them in the tray and come through again. Woman: Where’s my bag? Security officer: Looks like your bag has to be searched. Woman: This is ridiculous. I’m gonna miss my flight. Security officer: Do you have anything sharp here? Woman: No nothing. Security officer: You can’t take jars on the airplane. Woman: why not? Security officer: It’s a liquid madam. No liquids over 100 milliliters. Woman: This is crazy. It’s only honey. Security officer: I’m afraid, those are the rules. Woman: Fine. Keep them.

TIPS

Immigration is the place where officials check the documents of everyone entering the country (=also known as passport control). Have your documents ready. Example: you will need an immigration form, which should have been filled in, your passport, your return ticket, your visa (if you are a student or traveling for work). customs officer/representative: the employee that works in the government department that collects taxes on goods bought and sold and on goods brought into the country, and that checks what is brought in. When the customs officer asks you for something, you give it to them and say: here you go/here you are. Example: officer: Can I have your passport please? passenger: Here you go.

At your destination

Questions

Relax and answer questions quickly and in very few words. You may be asked many of these questions at customs: Where are you flying from? What’s your final destination (=last stop)? How long will you be staying in the United States? Can I see your return ticket please? Possible answer: If you have an open ticket (a one year open ticket say “I have a one-year open ticket, I’m not sure we I’m going back but within a year) What’s the purpose of your visit? business or pleasure? Possible answers: to visit family/ work/ business/ tourism/ vacation/ transit (I was catching a flight to my next place) Where will you be staying? Possible answers: If you are staying in the US, make sure you have your hotel/friend’s house/dorm address ready to tell the customs officer How much currency are you carrying with you (=how much cash?). Tip: they don’t care about traveler’s checks or credit cards. You are allowed 10,000 dollars

Thank you!
