Plant breeding is the art and science of improving agricultural plants for the benefit of mankind. Crop breeding is a rapidly advancing science, using genetic and biological innovations to efficiently develop better crop varieties. When two related plants with desirable traits are bred together, their offspring are often bigger and boast higher yields. This is called heterosis or hybrid vigour.

Hétérosis ou vigueur hybride
La sélection végétale est l'art et la science de l'amélioration des plantes agricoles au profit de l'humanité. La sélection des cultures est une science qui progresse rapidement, utilisant les innovations génétiques et biologiques pour développer efficacement de meilleures variétés de cultures. Lorsque deux plantes apparentées présentant des caractéristiques souhaitables sont sélectionnées ensemble, leur progéniture est souvent plus grande et offre des rendements plus élevés. C'est ce qu'on appelle l'hétérosis ou la vigueur hybride.
