Social Emotional Learning

LET'S TALK ABOUT

The CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) addresses five broad areas of competence: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The CASEL 5 can be taught and applied at various developmental stages from childhood to adulthood.

Decades of research demonstrate that SEL has the following benefits:

  • Improvement in students’ social and emotional skills, attitudes, relationships, academic performance, and their perceptions of the classroom and school climate
  • A decline in students’ anxiety, behavioral problems, and substance use
  • Long-term improvements in students’ abilities, attitudes, social behavior, and academic performance

  • The Impact Is Long-Term and Global: SEL programming can have a positive impact up to 18 years later on academics, behavior problems, emotional distress, and substance use.
  • Better Academic Outcomes and Improved Behaviors: SEL interventions have increased students’ academic performance by 11 percentile points, compared to students who did not participate in SEL programs. Students participating in SEL programs also showed improved classroom behavior, as well as better attitudes about themselves, others, and school.
