Past progressive can be a form of a verb that shows that the action was in progress at a given time or in a given period in the past
The structure of this tense is relatively simple, let's see: AFFIRMATIVE: Subject+verb to be in the past (was or were)+main verb+ing+complement
Subject+verb to be in the past+not+main verb+ing+complement

To the form the past progresive the auxiliary verb "to be" and the gerund(infinitive-ing) of the verb are used.
