PRESPOSITION "OVER" (sobre o encima)

The preposition Over means that an object is on top of a surface or something, but without touching it. Over the table, it would mean that it is on the table, but without being leaning on it. And it can also have the sense that this object to which it refers, is in motion.

We use "over" for quantities:

  • We counted over a hundred ducks on the lake.
  • Contamos más de cien patos en el lago.
  • There were over ten thousand people at the event.
  • Hubo más de diez mil personas en el espectáculo.
  • The dog jumped over the fence and ran away.
  • El perro saltó por encima de la cerca y huyó.
  • They have built a bridge over the river.
  • Han construído un puente sobre el río.

When we want to say that something completely covers something else, we use "over" if they are touching or not:
