Should have and Could have

start

Should have

We use should (not) have + past participle to talk about regrets about past actions.

  • should have when something was the right thing to do, but we didn't do it.
We should have brought more food-we are very hungry now. They should have known that there are wild animals in the forest.
  • Shouldn't have when something was the wrong thing to do, but we did it.
We shouldn't have put our tents there. We shouldn't have camped out without the necessary equipment.

We also use should/shouldn't have to criticize people's actions

You shouldn't have yelled at her that was very rude.

Could have

We use could (not) have + past participle to say whether something that didn't happen was possible or impossible.

  • could have when something was possible, but it didn't happen.
You could have really hurt yourself in that fall. I'm glad you're okay.
  • couldn't have when something was impossible and it didn't happen.
We couldn't have arrived earlier to the forest. The traffic was terrible. (We didn't come earlier and it wasn't possible because of traffic)

We also use could have to say something was possible in the past and we're not sure if it happened He could have gotten lost when we went hiking. (It's possible he got lost but we don't know what happened)

Thanks!
