ECUADOR VS THE UNITED STATES

GROUPWORK

YOU WILL WORK IN GROUPS AND DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS

1. What do you know about The United States and Ecuador? 2. How do Americans and Ecuadorians celebrate Day of the dead?

DAY OF THE DEAD

The day of the dead. Ecuador is famous for its colorful festivals and every town in the country has their own traditional celebrations and events throughout the year. One of them is on November 2. It is the celebration of the Day of the Dead, a memorial for loved ones who have gone to “the beyond”. Families in urban and rural areas still prepare the traditional colada morada, which is made from black corn flour and fruits, and guaguas, which is bread shaped and decorated in the form of a small child. In urban areas, thousands of people gather in cemeteries to clean and decorate the graves of their loved ones. It is a national holiday. Businesses and schools are closed and vendors line the streets that lead to the cemeteries, selling flowers, candles, candy, and food. In the United States this celebration has much to do with its history as well as its appearance. “Halloween” comes from the English expression “All Hallow´s Eve” which means ‘Eve of all Saints’. On this day the witches had greater powers and the spirits came from beyond the grave that night and everything is diluted between black magic and reality. Many Christians visit cemeteries where their loved ones are buried. Some cemeteries offer candles to be placed on these graves. The candles are blessed and marked with the names of the deceased to be placed at the designated grave sites. The Catholic Church remembers deceased members of the congregation on this day
