EMPHASIS

using IT for emphasis

There were a lot of people , men and women with beautiful voices and great skills who probably wanted to work with the Beatles... But IT WAS Mary Hopkin was was called the fifth Beatle.

Sometimes we want to emphasise a part of a sentence that introduces new or different information.

e.g. Many people think of Phil Collins as the singer of Genesis. But IT WAS Peter Gabriel who sang on their early albums.

IT sentences can emphasise the subject or object of the sentence.

e.g. Pink Floyd recorded "Dark Side of the Moon"IT WAS PINK FLOYD that recorded "Dark Side of the Moon" - the subject is stressed IT WAS " Dark Side of the Moon" that Pink Floyd recorded. - the object is stressed

Rewrite the sentences using IT to emphasise the underlined word or phrase. 1. Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa, not Michelangelo. 2. Shirley Bassey sang many of the James Bond theme songs. 3. My dearest Molly, I can't begin to tell you how much I miss you. If only I didn't listen // hadn't listened to Tommy Evans all those months ago when he said he wanted a driver to take him to the airport.
