Writing an essay

In part 1 you must write an essay which consists in:

  • Discussing and analysing the subject given
  • Expressing your opinion
  • Giving reasons to justify it

Answer the essay question between 140-190 words using the points given an adding an idea of your own

You will be asked to write one of two types of essay:

Essay 1

You have to discuss a statement and give your opinion

Essay 2

You have to discuss which of two things is better

The Structure:

Introduction: it introduces the topic in a general way and it leads to the second paragraph (first idea).Paragraph 2: it deals with idea 1. Paragraph 3: it deals with idea 2. Paragraph 4: it deals with idea you have to choose Conclusion: express your opinion to conclude and summarise your argument

You should:

  • Write 4 or 5 paragraphs
  • Follow a logical order and connect the points with appropriate linkers.
  • Express your opinion clearly on the subject
  • Give reasons and examples to support your ideas
  • Use a semi formal style and don't use contractions (It is for your teacher)
  • Include a variety of grammatical structures (conditionals,relative clauses)
  • Use accurate spelling and punctuation
  • You don't have to choose one option or the other if you think both have advantages
