SELECTIVE BREEDING

Advantages and disadvantages of selective breeding

01

Might get improved organisms

01

Undesirable traits from both parents may appear in the offspring

Disease can accumulate in the population

02

Can be performed easily by farmers & breeders

02

Selective breeding

also known as artificial selection, is choosing parents with particular characteristics to breed together and produce offspring. - What is selective breeding used for? humans use selective breeding to pass wanted traits on to the next generation of organisms.

Hybridization

is known as crossing dis-similar individuals to bring together the best of both organisms. Hybrids are the individuals produced by hybridization. For example:- lion and tiger -Who was the first scientist to use the hybridization method? American botanist Luther Burbank.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF HYBRIDIZATION

Some animal can become extinct

01

We get different types of animals and organisms

01

Some animals could be prone to more diseases.

02

02

Can get healthier animals and organisms

Inbreeding

is the continued breeding of individuals with similar characteristics. Purebreds are individuals produced by inbreeding. For example:- dog breeding (poodles, beagles)

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF INBREEDING

Increased probability that the two copies of any given gene will be identical.

Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the application of a technological process, invention, or method to living organisms.

Selective breeding is one form of biotechnology, and there are many others

Breeders can increase the genetic variation in a population by introducing mutations, which are the ultimate source of biological diversity.
