Research Data Management (RDM)
RDM covers all the steps involved in the day-to-day management of data during the life of a research project:
Research Data Management (RDM)
=>New skills
RDM involves new and unconventional skills, such as:
Organising and naming files correctly so that they are easy to find and clearly identified by other team members
Creating regular backups to prevent data loss
Depositing data in a repository to make it accessible to the scientific community
Open Badges (OBs)
Research Data Management (RDM)
=>New skills
=>Recognising skills
OBs represent an opportunity to recognise and value these good practices. Unlike certificates or diplomas, OBs are more flexible and allow specific skills to be recognised.

So now, the question is
How to associate OBs in research organisations?
This is a role for a facilitator!
Create an ecosystem
Animate the

Data repositories
Scientific journals
It will be a question of setting up an ecosystem bringing together the actors, i.e. scientific institutions, with stakeholders such as training organisations, scientific journals and data repositories.
Create an ecosystem

- Support staff
- Etc.

Data repositories
Scientific journals
Because it is an interoperable system, the OB platform will be able to be connected on all sites and to attest the competences of the actors (researchers, PhD, Support staff, etc.) in the field of RDM.
Create an ecosystem

Scientific organisations
Training organisations
For example, a training organisation could issue an OB to a PhD following a training course on RDM.
Data repositories
Scientific journals
Or a data repository could issue an OB to a researcher following a dataset deposit.
... and animate it!

To function properly, this ecosystem needs to be animated, i.e. people need to motivate and support actors and stakeholders to engage in OB projects.
The role of these people, called "facilitators", is to encourage actors and stakeholders to set up an OB system and to help the project leaders to carry it out.

A facilitator works within an organisation and is part of its staff. He or she may be a librarian, a member of a research support office, possibly a student and even a researcher. In all cases, the facilitator works with different departments within the organisation and sometimes externally with the organisation's partners on research projects.
So the facilitator animates the ecosystem...
But what does he have to do concretely?
That's a good question!
Facilitator's job
Finding opportunities
The facilitator's job will be to find opportunities. He or she will have to analyse the practices related to RDM in his/her institution and identify the people who carry them out.

Finding opportunities
The facilitator's job will be to find opportunities. He or she will have to analyse the practices related to RDM in his/her institution and identify the people who carry them out.
The result of this first step should be a shortlist of activities that can be attested by OBs.
Explaining & convincing
The second step is to find a research team or department that is willing to launch an OB project. To do this, the facilitator will have to explain what OBs are, how they can support competence management, and try to convince to involve in an OB project.
Supporting the project
Once an OB project for data management has been decided, the third step is to support the project. The facilitator will support all questions related to OBs.
- Which service to choose?
- Which metadata to include?
- How to connect the OB service to other platforms?
- Etc.
Supporting the project
The facilitator will also carry out a precise analysis of the competences, skills and experiences evidenced by the badges, firstly to design the badges correctly, but also to feed into the RDM competences framework, which is one of the objectives of the Oberred programme.
