What is the Passive Voice?

The Passive Voice is a construction where the direct object become the subject in a sentence.

Here’s a sure-fire formula for identifying the passive voice:

Form of “to be” + past participle = Passive Voice

Some examples of passive form

Ex 1:

Our planet is wrapped in a mass of gases.

  • To be: is
  • Past Participle: wrapped

Ex 2:

The mouse was eaten by the cat

  • To be: was
  • Past Participle: eaten

from the active form to the passive form

  1. Active Form: My mom cooked a good cake
  2. Passive Form: A good cake was cooked by my mom
  1. Active Form: My cat broke a vase
  2. Passive Form: A vase was broken by my cat
  1. Active Form: The doctor saw me
  2. Passive Form: I was seen by the doctor
