What is the Passive Voice?
The Passive Voice is a construction where the direct object become the subject in a sentence.
Here’s a sure-fire formula for identifying the passive voice:
Form of “to be” + past participle = Passive Voice
Some examples of passive form
Ex 1:
Our planet is wrapped in a mass of gases.
- To be: is
- Past Participle: wrapped
Ex 2:
The mouse was eaten by the cat
- To be: was
- Past Participle: eaten
from the active form to the passive form
- Active Form: My mom cooked a good cake
- Passive Form: A good cake was cooked by my mom
- Active Form: My cat broke a vase
- Passive Form: A vase was broken by my cat
- Active Form: The doctor saw me
- Passive Form: I was seen by the doctor
