SILOS
WHAT ARE THEY?
We can find the origin of the word silo in the Latin sirus, and in the Greek seirós, and they refer to an underground excavation or barn where the grain is stored for its conservation and future use. Thus, a silo is a construction designed to store grain, cereals and other bulk materials (cement for construction, coal, etc.) ensuring the correct conservation and treatment of the product. We are going to focus on silos for agricultural use; for storage of all types of grain, cereals, corn, legumes or oilseeds, and specifically, those dedicated to the storage of grain and cereal.

SILOS, HOW DID THEY ARISE?
The National Silos Network
The National Silos and Barns Network, or simply the National Silos Network, was born during the Franco regime, with the aim of encouraging and promoting the construction of silos and barns and contributing to the improvement and maintenance of agricultural exploitation in the country.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SILOS TODAY?
Between 1996 and 2001 the central government carried out a transfer of powers in agriculture to the different autonomous communities, passing the silos to be direct management of each autonomous community, and these, in turn, transferred said management to the different municipal administrations and town halls.
Inevitably, with the passage of time some silos have fallen into oblivion and abandonment, however, and although today some silos still continue to fulfill their functions, there are also many silos that are in disuse. For this reason, the institutions in charge have thought of new and diverse forms of activity to give life anew to what were once called the cathedrals of the field.
SILOS TODAY
Taking advantage of their undoubted patrimonial value, today the silos have regained some interest through their rehabilitation as public facilities.
Thus, in recent years an interest has developed in institutions and private companies, where they see a great opportunity to develop their projects on these buildings so strongly rooted in our history.
Here we present two very original and interesting proposals that try to give life to these emblematic buildings that are already part of the landscape and the history of our region and our country.
