We use quantifiers to speak about the number or the amount of something.

LARGE QUANTITIES

A LOT OF/LOTS OF/MUCH/MANY/PLENTY OF

  • We use a lot of/lots of/plenty of in positive sentences.
  • We use much with uncountable nouns and many with countable nouns
  • Remember: do not confuse a lot and a lot of!
  • I have a lot of time.
  • He sings a lot when he is alone.

SMALL QUANTITIES

A LITTLE/LITTLE/A FEW/FEW

  • We use a little/little to speak about uncountable nouns.
  • We use a few/few to speak about countable nouns.
  • Remember: little -> less, few -> fewer

MORE OR LESS THAN YOU NEED

TOO MUCH/TOO MANY/NOT ENOUGH

  1. Since he lost his job Tom has too much time on his hands.
  2. I think I've made too many sandwiches!
  3. There aren't enough parks in my town.
  4. The room isn't big enough for me.

TOO MUCH/TOO MANY/NOT ENOUGH

  • We use too much to speak about uncountable nouns.
  • We use too many to speak about countable nouns.
  • We use enough before the noun and after the adjective.

ZERO QUANTITY

ANY/NO/NONE

THERE IS NO MILK LEFT.

THERE ISN'T ANY MILK LEFT.

A: HAVE WE GOT ANY EGGS? B: NONE.

  1. We use any and no with plural and uncountable nouns.
  2. Any + a negative verb
  3. No + a positive verb
  4. None is used without a noun in short answers.
