QUANTIFIERS
We use quantifiers to speak about the number or the amount of something.
LARGE QUANTITIES
A LOT OF/LOTS OF/MUCH/MANY/PLENTY OF
- We use a lot of/lots of/plenty of in positive sentences.
- We use much with uncountable nouns and many with countable nouns
- Remember: do not confuse a lot and a lot of!
- I have a lot of time.
- He sings a lot when he is alone.
SMALL QUANTITIES
A LITTLE/LITTLE/A FEW/FEW
- We use a little/little to speak about uncountable nouns.
- We use a few/few to speak about countable nouns.
- Remember: little -> less, few -> fewer
MORE OR LESS THAN YOU NEED
TOO MUCH/TOO MANY/NOT ENOUGH
- Since he lost his job Tom has too much time on his hands.
- I think I've made too many sandwiches!
- There aren't enough parks in my town.
- The room isn't big enough for me.
TOO MUCH/TOO MANY/NOT ENOUGH
- We use too much to speak about uncountable nouns.
- We use too many to speak about countable nouns.
- We use enough before the noun and after the adjective.
ZERO QUANTITY
ANY/NO/NONE
THERE IS NO MILK LEFT.
THERE ISN'T ANY MILK LEFT.
A: HAVE WE GOT ANY EGGS? B: NONE.
- We use any and no with plural and uncountable nouns.
- Any + a negative verb
- No + a positive verb
- None is used without a noun in short answers.
