THE HIPPIE YOUTH CULTURE

Began in the United States during the mid-1960s. Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac were the precursors of hippies

LOVE AND PEACE

LIFESTYLE

ORIGIN

Hippies advocated nonviolence and love, a popular phrase being “Make love, not war,” for which they were sometimes called “flower children.” They promoted openess and tolerance. They also practised open sexual relationships

The name is coined from “hip,” a term applied to the Beats of the 1950s. It is a countercultural movement that originated from college campuses in the United States which later spread to other coutries including Canada and Britain

The important parts of the hippie movement were public gatherings, part music festivals, and even protests. Mostly excuses for celebrations of life. They also joined other protesters in the nationwide demonstration against the war called "Moratorium" in 1969..

Hippies created their own communities, listened to psychedelic music, embraced the sexual revolution, and many used drugs such as marijuana and LSD to explore altered states of consciousness. They were involved in the development of the environmental movement. The first Earth Day was held in 1970

They loved to wear long hair and dresses, sometimes in “mind-altering” colours. The men grew beards, and both men and women wore sandals and beads with rimless granny glasses (both men and women)

Duis autem vel eum iriure dolor in hendrerit in vulputate velit esse.

By the mid-1970s the movement had declined, and In the 1980s hippies had been taken over by a new generation of young people who were focused on making careers for themselves in business and who came to be known as yuppies (young urban professionals)
