Adaptations to Curriculum

Activate Prior Knowledge with JamboardConnecting prior knowledge helps to activate and make learning more meaningful and engaging (Ferlazzo, 2021). The use of online collaborative platforms like Jamboard can help capture a student's knowledge and personal experience on a given topic. Students have the choice to use text, pictures, images, or drawings. Visuals & Media Integrating visuals and media can enhance student learning by giving them a clear picture of the topic or subject matter. Pictures, diagrams, drawings, and videos can help to clarify, extend, or deepen learning for all students. Many educational videos are available online, covering history, science, math, language arts, etc.

Frontloading Vocabulary with Google SlidesUsing Google Slides to display key vocabulary words with a picture and definition will help with reading comprehension. The vocabulary word is introduced before a text. This will allow learners to make sense of what they are reading and focus on a lesson's core objective rather than deciphering unknown words. Audio Recording Audio recordings support learners in multiple ways. An audio recording of a text can help beginning readers with fluency, expression, decoding, and comprehension. Students learning to speak English can develop vocabulary and language by listening to audio recordings and practicing aloud. Breakout Rooms Breakout rooms allow all students to voice their ideas, knowledge, experiences in a smaller group setting. Students may feel more comfortable sharing with fewer students rather than in whole-class discussions. Breakout rooms increase participation and support peer-to-peer learning.

Implementing Culturally Responsive Technology

Culturally Responsive Technology

ModelingDemonstrate how to use technology through explicit instructions and modeling. Technology can have many complex features which may be difficult to navigate. Giving students a tutorial on effectively using a digital website or tool will increase effective use and enhance learning. Discovery Learning Allow students to explore new technology freely. It will give them a chance to learn (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2017) and become familiar with its features and tools. Allow students to manipulate digital tools without the pressure of applying content-related material.

Learning A-Z Online Reading Program Learning A-Z is an online personalized reading program. The lessons and online books are differentiated to meet each student's literacy needs. The program offers a multitude of digital books that cover a range of genres and topics so that students find books of their interests. The program is built to improve student's literacy skills using high-interest books and comprehension quizzes. FlipGrid FlipGrid is an educational platform that gives students the creative power to record, design, and upload videos in response to a class discussion. These online websites allow students to share their ideas, opinions, knowledge, and experiences with their peers in a safe learning digital environment. They can listen and learn from one another.

Recommendations

Time Management Using technology to complete an assignment may require additional time. Determine how much time the activity or project will take. Also, think about your students and the type of accommodations needed to complete the task. Selection of Technology Select the most appropriate learning tool for an activity. Determine what prerequisite skills students will need to use this digital platform. Troubleshoot possible roadblocks before using the program.

Digital Skill Level Students have different experiences and knowledge with technology. Think about your student's digital abilities, such as typing skills and level of experience. Students may need guidance to complete an assignment. Student Interest Pay attention to what technologies excite and engage students so that you continue to utilize this resource. When high-interest resources or topics are integrated into the classroom, students are more invested in their learning (Deady, 2020).
