In Excel, you can easily insert, rename, and delete worksheets in your workbook.

Rename a worksheet

In Excel, you can easily rename worksheets in your workbook using one of three methods. You can also change the colour of a worksheet tab.

To rename a worksheet, do one of the following:

  • Double click the sheet tab and type the new name
  • Right-click the sheet tab, click Rename, and type the new name.
  • From the Home tab, Format group, select Rename Sheet

To change the colour of a worksheet tab:

Note: Worksheet names cannot be left blank, or contain more than 31 characters. The following characters cannot be used in worksheet names: / \ ? * : [ ]

  • Right-click the sheet tab, click Tab Color, and select a colour

You can use the Move or Copy Sheet command to move or copy entire worksheets (also known as sheets), to other locations in the same or a different workbook. You can use the Cut and Copy commands to move or copy a portion of the data to other worksheets or workbooks.

Print Excel worksheets and workbooks one at a time, or several at one time. You can also print a partial worksheet, such as an Excel table.

Select worksheets

Select a Single Worksheet Click the tab for the sheet you want to edit. The active sheet will be a different color than other sheets. Select Consecutive WorksheetsPress and hold down the Shift key, and click the first worksheet tab you want and then the last worksheet tab that you want to select. Select Non-Consecutive Worksheets Press and hold down the Ctrl key, and click the worksheet tabs you want to select.

You can quickly select one or more sheets in a workbook by clicking the sheet tabs at the bottom of the Excel window. To enter or edit data on several worksheets at the same time, you can group worksheets by selecting multiple sheets. See Group Mode slide for more details. You can also format or print a selection of sheets at the same time.

Group Consecutive WorksheetsPress and hold down the Shift key, and click the first worksheet tab you want to group and then the last worksheet tab in the group. Group Non-Consecutive Worksheets Press and hold down the Ctrl key, and click the worksheet tabs you want to group. Group all Worksheets in the Workbook Right-click any worksheet tab and click Select All Sheets. Ungroup Worksheets Right-click any worksheet tab in the group and and click Ungroup Sheets. Note: When you group worksheets, the name of the workbook changes to include [Group].

You can quickly perform tasks on multiple worksheets at the same time by grouping worksheets together. WARNING! If you group a set of worksheets, ANY changes you make on one worksheet are made in all the other worksheets in the group in the exact same location on the worksheets.

Formulas across worksheets

You can create a formula on one worksheet that refers to cells on another worksheet within the workbook. The worksheet name and cell reference must be included in the formula. if you click on the relevant worksheet sheet tab and then the cell you want to work with, excel automatically supplies the sheet name for you. Example: SALES!A5
