Gerund, fiil köküne "-ing" ekinin eklenmesiyle oluşur. Bu ek Türkçede isim-fiil yapan '-me , -ma' ile aynı görevi yerine getirmektedir. Gerundlar cümlede bir ismin kulllanıldığı her yerde kullanılabilirler. Yani özne veya nesne konumunda bulunabilirler.

GERUNDS AS SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE

Participles yan cümleciklerin kısaltılmasıdır. Yan cümlecikler ana cümleye bağımlı olan ve başında bağlaç bulunan cümleciklerdir. - Bir zarf cümleciğini sözcük öbeği biçiminde kısaltabiliriz. Present Participle kullanımında kısaltılacak cümle etken bir fiile sahip olmalıdır ve cümlelerde bariz bir zaman farkı bulunmamalıdır.
- Eylemler genellikle eş zamanlıdır veya art arda gerçekleşmiştir.
