- Edvard Munch, lived from 1863 to 1944, was a Norwegian painter and graphic artist and one of the most important pioneers of Expressionism in Europe.
- Munch's early paintings are realistic pictures with a strong emotional content.
- Existential themes such as fear, death, love, jealousy and melancholy took center stage.
- Important works by him were: The Scream, The Sick Girl, murals of the University Hall in Oslo

The scream
This painting by Edward Munch is one of the most famous of his works.
- shows man in his fear and loneliness.
- You can see in the foreground of the painting a screaming person standing on a bridge.
- This slender, young person has a green and white face distorted with fear, a wide open mouth and eyes fixed in terror. His hands are cramped against his face.
- The person's head looks like a skull and has neither hair nor eyebrows.
- Fear is reflected in the screaming man's eyes, which are widened in horror.
- Munch used a Peruvian mummy as a model for this face.
- Just this picture is shown again and again as one of the most typical of expressionism.
