Yi Peng festival, Thailand
The Yi Peng festival is a special festival celebrated by the Lanna of northern Thailand. It´s celebrated on the full moon day of the twelfth lunar month according to the Thai calendar. it´s a spectacular festival of lights in which thousands of balloons with lights are launched into the sky, normally accompanied by prayers and wishes. These flying lanterns are known as khom loi and are usually made from fine rice paper.
Furthermore, the custom is to make a wish before releasing the paper lanterns, as well as a way for people to release the suffering they had been holding within themselves for the past year.
Fireworks light up the sky with increasing intensity as the climax of Yi Peng approaches, and the biggest event for shutters is the mass release of lanterns taking place at Mae Jo University. Thousands of lanterns fill the sky at once, which is such an intense event on its scale that air traffic controllers sometimes restrict access to the airspace around Chiang Mai during the course of this event.
Nowadays, Yi Peng Festival, is a photographer's dream come true, as the opportunities to take amazing photos are numerous over the course of this festival. Around the moat surrounding Chiang Mai, elaborately constructed lanterns in the shape of dragons, lotuses, and other designs can be found on the temple grounds and at each of the gates that allow access to the Old City.
For those points The Yi Peng festival is considered as one of the most important cultural, mystical and spiritual traditions of Thai culture and even for foreign people because the lighting of the lanterns is very attractive. It´s celebrated according to the Thai lunar calendar. These incandescent lanterns are made of rice paper on a bamboo or wire frame and powered by the fire of a candle or a small fuel tank. Also known as the Lantern Festival and Usually the dates vary from mid-October to mid-November.
