Introduction
The Alarcos Archaeological Park is made up of a nucleus located in the Alarcos site and its surroundings and the open archaeological site called Calatrava la Vieja. It is an “Iberian oppidum”, with a long cultural ascription, spanning from the Bronze Age to the end of the Middle Ages. The place is located 8 kms. Northwest of the urban area of Poblete (Ciudad Real).

It has been identified by numerous authors as the ancient city of Lacuris, Lacuri or Larcuris, "oppidum" oretano cited by Ptolemy; this could be confirmed by the appearance of a tombstone in Malagón erected in honor of P. Corneli Larcuritano. Thus, we can speak of a protohistoric cultural stage, in which this Oretan city presents a fairly deep process of iberization.

From the Roman republican period, various ceramic and imperial remains have been found and the existence of a necropolis in the vicinity of the Hill can be confirmed. From this moment on and until well into the 11th century, we did not find any news about the site and it is very difficult to establish the historical panorama that this region could present until the beginning of the Reconquest.

The first known news is framed in a legendary landscape, known as that of the dowry of Princess Zaida. It is narrated that Mutamid of Seville gave the city, along with some others, for the marriage of her daughter with Alfonso VI. Later ceded by the Christians, Alfonso VII snatched it from the Muslims in 1130 and later lost it again and "recovered it again in 1158, although it had become a heap of ruins."

Introduction
Rebuilt and repopulated in 1178 by Alfonso VIII, its defense was entrusted to the Knights of Calatrava, who later obtained it as their property. When in the year 1195 Alfonso VIII was defeated by the Almohad leader Almansur Yakub-ben-Yusef in the battle of Alarcos, the fortress was demolished and turned over to the flames, its inhabitants being taken to the coast of Africa. Alarcos would be reconquered after the victory in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.
