Intensive Agriculture
Intensive agriculture is a kind of agriculture which use different products to maximise the yield:
CROPS aNIMALS
Intensive agriculture use a lot of inputs to maximize the yield of crops. For example, pesticides are used to destroy insects or weeds, and fertilizer to supply plant nutrient.
Antibiotics are used in intensive animal farming to avoid the propagation of diseases among the livestock and as a consequence maximize the yield.
We can find transgenic animals which have selected characteristic to make them resistant to diseases or to make them grow faster for example.
Sometimes GMOs are also usedto increase crop production with more resistance to insects, virus,or drought.
(transgenic salmon which grow faster)
GMOs can improve the health of human consumers. For example, there is the golden rice which is a remedy to vitamin A deficiency and as a consequence avoid blindness.
To get the same results, hormones are also used, it improves the meet quality as well.
It could also deteriorate the health of the humans because of the use of antibiotic pollutes drinking water. As a consequence the humans eat those, so it could disrupt the growing of babies and create antibiotics resistance.
Human consumers are exposed to pesticides and there are risks of diseases such as cancers or tumours.
Nevertheless, this kind of agriculture create controversies about animal welfare. Indeed, they live in an uncomfortable situation : they are piled up.
It pollutes the environment, deteriorates soil, and eliminates biodiversity. Moreover, there is a risk of eutrophication of water.
To conclude, intensive agriculture guarantee a high yield but have huge bad consequences on the heath of humans and on the environnement. It is not a sustainable solution to feed the humanity.
