Lightning Protection System Installation
Hazards of Lightning Strikes
- When the lightning strikes the ground, there is an increase in the earth’s potential that would result in a high voltage potential between the center conductor and shield of the coaxial cable. This high voltage increases further since the voltage surge generated onto the center conductor lags in time behind the voltage surge generated onto the shield.
- The area’s ground potential rises to a dangerous level when lightning strikes. If the environment is unprotected, this harms the personnel or electronic equipment. It also directs a portion of the strike energy down the inner conductor of the coaxial cable to the connected equipment.
Ways to Mitigate Lightning Hazards● Do not install the antennas or antenna coaxial cables outside the building when there is a lightning storm. ● While over-voltages caused by lightning cannot be completely avoided, use of a lightning protection device can divert a large portion of the transient energy to the building ground, which helps in minimizing the over-voltage condition as quickly as possible. ● The operator or customer must provide primary lightning as part of the extra building installation in accordance with local building codes. ● Use a secondary lightning protection device for in-building equipment installations with external antennas. ○ Polyphaser - Surge Arrestor DGXZ+36NFNF-A is a device approved by NovAtel Inc.
Ways to Mitigate Lightning Hazards○ If this is not chosen as the main lightning protection device, the alternative must be UL listed (or equivalent) in the country where lightning surge protection is installed. ● The primary device should be able to limit an incoming surge to 10 kV. ● The shield of the coaxial cable that enters the building must be fixed at a grounding plate at the building's entrance. The lightning protection devices must have their chassis grounded to the same ground near the building's entrance. ● The primary and secondary lightning protections must be as near to the building's entrance as possible. Fix onto the grounding plate itself where it is most practical.
Acceptable choices for grounding in central buildings ● Grounded interior metal cold water pipe within 5 feet (1.5 m) of the point where it enters the building ● Grounded service entrance conduit with bonding metallic service raceway ● Grounded electrical service equipment enclosure ● 8-feet grounding rod buried into the ground, provided it is bonded to the central building ground using a #6, or heavier bonding wire

Installation Procedure of Lightning Protection System 1. Ensure that work permits and materials are in place before the start of work. 2. Installation must follow manufacturer’s instruction, electrical plan/drawings and Job Specifications. 3. Verify the actual routing of copper tape and grounding wires for installation based on the approved construction drawings.
Installation Procedure of Lightning Protection System 4. In the attic or the ceiling underneath the roof, run the ridge cable which connects the lightning rods on a roof to the grounding. 5. Draw a half-inch hole through the ridge and install a through-roof assembly. Make sure the ridge cable is securely fastened to the base plate. 6. On the roof, cut the thread rod to the proper length. Seal it with roofing cement and install a nut in the washer. Screw the lightning rod on top. Follow this procedure for all the points of the roof with air terminal based on the plan

Installation Procedure of Lightning Protection System 7. Run the down lead on the side of the house which will be securely connected to a ground rod. 8. Drive the ground rod 8 feet in the ground. Ground rod should not exceed 25 ohms. The resistance should only reach 25 ohms and below.

Installation Procedure of Lightning Protection System 9. Insert the down lead on the side of the house into an electrical conduit. Attach it to the wall with proper clamps. 10. Make a path on the soil for the connection of the down lead to the lightning ground rod. Connect the down lead to the lightning ground rod using the appropriate fittings. 11. Installing the lightning arrester.

NOTE: ● A violation of Art. 2.50.3.11 which does not allow use of the same grounding electrode for a lightning rod system and a system supply.
● Art. 250.5.17 Lightning Protection System. The bonding of a system grounding electrode and a lightning rod grounding electrode.
