DEFINITION

Reflexive pronouns are words to refer back:myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves and themselves. They refer back to a person or thing. We often use reflexive pronouns when the subject and the object of a verb are the same. (1)

WHEN TO USE THEM?

  • By + reflexive pronoun
    • by + reflexive pronoun to mean alone.
  • Reciprocal pronouns (each other, one another)
    • With reciprocal pronouns, each person does the action to the other person/people but not to themselves.
  • Adding emphasis
    • To emphasize when something is unusual or different.
    • To emphasize that someone does an activity personally, not anybody else.
    • Together with the noun it refers to, in order to emphasise it.
