What is it?
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
is a Sunni jihadist group with a particularly violent ideology that calls itself a caliphate and claims religious authority over all Muslims

How was ISIS formed?
It sprang from al Qaeda in Iraq
A surge of US troops, with the help of Sunni tribesmen who were at odds with al Qaeda, largely defeated the group in Iraq It took territory, and a new name: ISISIt sprang from al Qaeda in Iraq
The group’s roots are in the Sunni terror group al Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), started in 2004 by Jordanian Islamist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi

Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi
is an Iraqi Islamist who is the second and current leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
The statement also claimed Hashemi was a veteran jihadist fighter who had fought against the US in the past. With the name "al-Qurashi", the group also made clear that he claims to be descended from the Prophet Muhammad's Quraysh tribe - something generally held by pre-modern Sunni scholars as being a key qualification for becoming a caliph.

Expansion and declarationn of a caliphate
From its stronghold in Al-Raqqah, ISIL expanded outward, launching successful offensives in both Syria and Iraq.
In late June the group released an audio message declaring a caliphate in the territory controlled by ISIL, with Baghdadi as the caliph.

The Syrian Civil War
In February 1982, Hafez al-Assad ordered the military to put down a Muslim Brotherhood uprising in the city of Hama with brute force. Syrian forces killed more than twenty-five thousand there.
In March 2011 Syria’s government, led by Pres. Bashar al-Assad, faced an unprecedented challenge to its authority when pro-democracy protests erupted throughout the country.
