Act II
Hamlet, act 2
scene 1
The act begins when Polonius, the dad of Ophelia, sends his servant Reynaldo to spy on Laertes. Reynaldo is told to act negatively around Laertes in order to observe how he really acts around people and abroad. Meanwhile, Hamlet meets Ophelia in a piteous and angry state. Ophelia is forced, by Polonius, to act uninterested and Hamlet chooses to appear mad to demand revenge on king Claudius for having killed his father. However, after the meet, Polonius instructs Ophelia to reunite with hamlet, because hiding their relationship would cause more misery than addressing it to Claudius and Gertrude.
SCENE 2
Claudius and Gertrude instruct Rosencratz and Guildensteirn, Hamlet's childhood friends, to spy on Hamlet, in Elsinore, to find cause of his erratic behavior. Meanwhile, representatives of Norway have asked and agreed with King Claudius that Prince Fortinbras and his army are allowed passage trough Denmark to attack Poland. After the representatives leave, Polonius, Gertrude and Claudius gather to talk about Hamlet; The queen believes Hamlet's behavior was triggered by the death of his father while Polonius believes its because of his love and affection towards Ophelia.
When Hamlets asks what brings them to Elsinore, the two tell Hamlet that a company of theatrical players have come to perform at the king's castle. Hamlet then orders the troupe to perform their play - the murder of Gonzago, and have them mimic the murder of his father, as described by the ghost.

deception
Polonius meets with Reynaldo, his servant, and pays him to go to Paris and spy on Laertes, who is the son of Polonius and brother to Ophelia. He wants Reynaldo to spy on him because he does not want him to get into too much trouble. He doesn’t want to find out that his son may be drinking, fencing, swearing, or going to brothels. He makes Reynaldo find any Danes that are living in Paris and to ask them the whereabouts and reputation of his son. Polonius tells Reynaldo to say Laertes committed immoral acts or even to accuse his son falsely “What forgeries you please”, to find out what people will say about Laertes. We find out that Laertes isn’t getting to any trouble.
revenge
When hamlet hears that the players are coming to perform, he requests that the lead player performs a speech from Virgil’s Aeneid where Aeneas tells Queen Dido the story of Phyrrus, whose father was killed at Rome. Hamlet reveals his intentions for the play. The players will perform an enhanced scene which will re-enact the murder that the Ghost described to him. He hopes that when the crime that Claudius did is re-enacted in front of him, he will show signs that he is guilty and hopefully reveal that he did in fact murder Hamlet’s father. “The play’s the thing,” he declares, “wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king”.
