USES of the Present Simple

Express Personal Information and Facts

Express Habits and Routines

We use the Present Simple to talk about things we do every day or with certain frequency (habits and routines). This use normally includes Time Expressions (always, sometimes, often). Example: "The students practice English every day" "I start work at 8:00 am on Saturdays" "My sister drinks water in the mornings"

We use the Present Simple to describe and state factual information about people and things. Example: "My father is a coordinator" "I live in Pereira with my family" "The teacher enjoys playing video games"

STRUCTURE of the Present Simple

It depends on WHO (the person) is doing the action

Case # 1 Examples: I live in Pereira We study at the UTP

Case # 2 Examples: My sister (she) studies at UniLibre Sebastian (he) lives in Cartago

Negatives and Questions

Remember to take notes on your Virtual Notebook

Negative Sentences

How do you talk about the things you do NOT do?

Structure

In English, when you want to "negate" or say something you do NOT do, you need to add an extra word called "auxiliary verb" + NOT. My Routine: I study English in the morning NEGATIVE = I DO NOT study French. My sister likes to watch movies. NEGATIVE = She DOES NOT like to watch series. In conclusion: I / You / they / we = Use DO (not) He / She / It = Use DOES (not)

Negative Structure

Questions

How do you ask questions about habits?

Structure

In English, when you want to "ASK" a question about routines or habits, you need to add an extra word called "auxiliary verb" and change the order of the words. Examples: I study English in the morning Question = DO you study French? My sister likes to watch movies. Question = DOES she like to watch series? In conclusion: DO/ DOES + Subject + Verb (base form) + Complement

Part 3

Frequency and Time Expressions

Remember to take notes on your Virtual Notebook

How often do you...?

Frequency and Time Expressions

Frequency/ Repetition

In English, there are some words/expressions that help us identify how frequent we do certain actions. For example: My father ALWAYS wakes up at 7:00 am I USUALLY listen to music in the afternoon My mom NEVER cooks on a Sunday

Note: Place the frequency expression between the subject and the verb.
