OTHER INFORMATIONS

It was officially opened on the 1st May 1851 by Queen Victoria herself. Throughout the five months it opened, it was always crowded, with an estimated six million people attending from the Uk and around the world. The profit of the event was around £15 million.

It was visited by many distinguished members of society, such as photographer Philip Henry Delamotte, intellectuals and poets Victor Hugo and Théophile Gautier. And music composer Hector Berlioz. They all report the Exposition and the Crystal Palace as “such marvels that words can’t describe”. At the end of the Exposition, the Crystal Palace was relocated to Penge Place in 1852, an area of South London now known as Crystal Palace. Unfortunately, the replica was destroyed by fire in 1936.
