There were different types of sport that were played mainly by the white population and to which other people didn’t have access.

Areas were segregated into areas for “whites” and “non-whites”

QUESTION 02

Nelson Mandela

Because of his attempts to end the apartheid system he spent a short time in prison on Robben Island.

Similar to Mahatma Gandhi in India, he supported peaceful protests and called for the end of apartheid without using violence.

Mandela was South Africa’s first black president and fought all his life to end racism, poverty and inequality. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize.

QUESTION 03

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission

The TRC was also criticised a lot because many people felt that granting amnesty was not a suitable way of dealing with perpetrators of human rights abuse. However, the commission was never meant to punish people, but to expose their role in crimes that were committed during apartheid.

The aim of the commission was to achieve reconciliation in South Africa’s divided society.

The TRC was set up to investigated political crimes that were committed during apartheid. They listened to statements and received more than 7,000 applications for amnesty.

Tourism

However, agriculture is still more important with regard to the economy.

More and more people want to travel to South Africa because of its nature and national parks. Apart from the Ebola epidemic, the numbers of tourists coming to the country have increased over the last years.

Tourism plays an important role for the South African economy and contributes up to 2.9% to the GDP.

QUESTION 02

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks amongst the finest in all of Africa and is famous for the diversity of animals there.

Kruger National Park is a very small park and is surrounded by two big cities.

When visiting Kruger National Park, you can see Africa’s Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard) which is why this park is very popular with tourists.

QUESTION 03

Poaching

While poaching is a huge problem in South Africa, animals living in national parks are lucky, as they are being protected so that poachers can’t harm them.

Sadly, poachers often try to kill those animals by using traps to make money with them. This often leads to animals being killed or gravely injured by the traps.

Because there are many special animals in South Africa’s national parks, they are very popular destinations for tourists.

WELCOME TO Johannesburg

START

Johannesburg played an important role during the apartheid system. Test yourself on what you can remember about Johannesburg and South Africa.

QUESTION 01

Townships around Johannesburg

The communities were grouped according to their ethnic identity to prevent them from expressing their worries as a unit.

Because of the discovery of gold near Johannesburg, more and more black people were coming to Johannesburg to make a living there. To allow for the segregation between the people due to apartheid rules and to maintain the distance between whites and blacks, the government moved them into areas far from the city centre.

Life in those townships was good and the blacks had the same privileges and commodities as the whites had in their areas. o Life in those townships was good and the blacks had the same privileges and commodities as the whites had in their areas.

QUESTION 02

Gimme hope, Jo’anna

This song by Eddy Grant is about small signs of change to the apartheid system and the hope of a more equal society.

Jo’anna refers to a well-known and popular woman who protested as a freedom activist against the injustices of the apartheid system.

This song highlights all the problems of apartheid and concludes that there is no hope for change.

QUESTION 03

Challenges in South Africa

While there has been a lot of progress, there are still many challenges in South Africa. Especially the economy is still very weak and fragile. However, in recent years it has improved and the unemployment rate decreased significantly.

Young people are divided over how they see their opportunities in South Africa. While there are many programmes to support students from more disadvantaged backgrounds, many say that there is still a huge gap between the rich and the poor.

Additionally, there are many health problems, for example Aids and HIV. Because of that, NGOs try to help affected people and support them. HOPE Cape Town is one of them which runs several programmes to help adults and children.
