Magna Carta
CONTEXT
Magna Carta, also known as "The Great
Charter" was made in Medieval England, in 1215.
The King at that time, King John, was very unpopular with his barons because he imposed them heavy taxes.
In consequence, they captured London and there were negotiations on June 1214 at Runnymede whose results were noted in the Magna Carta.
CONTENT AND MAIN POINTS
Clause 39
No free man shall be seized, imprisoned, dispossessed, outlawed, exiled or ruined in any way, nor in any way proceeded against, except by the lawful judgement of his peers and the law of the land.
Magna Carta is composed of 63 clauses that set out the medieval rights, customs and the operation of the justice system.
One of the most famous clause is the 39th that gave all free men the right to a fair trial and to justice. However, it was not so liberal because it just concerned free men while the majority of the population were unfree peasants...
Magna Carta has lived for 800 years !
