ALICE IN WONDERLAND
By Aurora Lenzi and Francesca Zanatta
THE AUTHOR and THE BOOK
Lewis Carroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born on January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, Cheshire, England and he died on January 14, 1898, in Guildford, Surrey. He was an english logician, mathematician, photographer, and novelist, especially remembered for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass (1871). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland had an enormous succes. It's a novella, set in the Victorian Age, that belongs to the genre of nonsense literature and children's fiction. Thanks to tons of methaphors, symbolism and a complicated word games, Carroll's book can be read also by an older pubblic.
THEMES
Even though it is a children's book , it contains intresting and profound themes 1. TIME AND SPACE these are two concepts that human beings can't live without and without which nothing makes sense to us. In this book they lose all their importance in the underground world, where Alice's adventure takes place. 2. GROWTH Alice's adventures are metaphors for the journey from childhood to adulthood. In fact throughout the entire book Alice has to face tons of new experiences, that allows her to learn how to manage new situations. 3. PERSONAL IDENTITY Alice during her experience in the undeground world seemS to lose her identity. This allows her to begin to question it
GREEK PHILOSOPHY IN ALICE IN WONDERLAND
The main element of nonsense in the book is the existence of NON-BEING. This is one of the oldest philosophical controversies and it's clear that Carrol was infuenced by his Greek philosophy studies. Carrol seems to follow the ideas of Heraclitus more than Parmenides's ones. In fact Parmenides belived that "non-being" and "being " couldn't live in the same space, time and world, however Heraclitus was convinced that they could co-exist peacefully. Therefore in Carroll's book seems that "nothingness" is a special essence, strengthened by the concept of "non-material". In fact the author shares the concept of non-material with the famous philosopher Plato.
