Matter, materials and mixtures
Unit 7: 3rd grade
What is matter?
Matter is everything around you, for example: rocks, a pen, water and even people are made of matter. It is everything that has got weith, volume and takes up space.

physical changes
Matter has got different properties (shape, size and state). These properties can change. These changes are called physical changes. We can distinguish between change of state and change of shape.
Return
Change of state
- The states of matter are: solid, liquid and gas.
- Solid can become liquid and liquid can become gas. Moreover, gas can become liquid and liquid can become solid.
Return
Change of shape
- We can modify the shape by pressing and stretching.
- For example: rubber or plasticine.
Return
Chemical changes
Sometimes matter reacts with air, water and other elements. These reactions are the chemical changes.
Return
Combustion
- When we burn paper the reaction is called combustion. The paper becomes another matter called ash.
Return
Oxidation
- It is produced when metal reacts with water and air (oxygen) and changes into a different matter.

Mixtures
A mixture is something that has got two or more different materials. In some of them we can see the materials and in others it's impossible to see them.
