Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto Born on May 30, 1892 Calle Herran Paco, Manila
At the age of 13, Amorsolo became an apprentice to De la Rosa, who would eventually become the advocate and guide to Amorsolo's painting career. During this time, Amorsolo's mother embroidered to earn money, while Amorsolo helped by selling water color postcards to a local bookstore for 10 centavos each.Amorsolo's first success as a young painter came in 1908, when his painting Leyendo el periódico took second place at the Bazar Escolta, a contest organized by the Asociacion Internacional de Artistas. Between 1909 and 1914, he enrolled at the Art School of the Liceo de Manila.
After graduating from the University of the Philippines, Amorsolo worked as a draftsman for the Bureau of Public Works, as a chief artist at the Pacific Commercial Company, and as a part-time instructor at the University of the Philippines (where he would work for 38 years). After three years as an instructor and commercial artist, Amorsolo was given a grant to study at the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, Spain by Filipino businessman Enrique Zóbel de Ayala.

TRIVIA-Amorsolo is famous for his bright landscapes, which often featured traditional Filipino customs, culture, fiestas, and occupations.-He was proficient in the classical tradition and wanted “to achieve his Philippine version of the Greek ideal for the human form.” -Amorsolo was also considered a persistent sketch artist and drew day-to-day scenes. -Amorsolo finished an average of 10 paintings per month during the 1950s until his death. -He made oils of all the Philippine presidents, including the revolutionary leader Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, and other noted Philippine figures.
Significance and ContibutionNumerous critics have written about how Amorsolo's work helped formed the national identity of Filipinos by nurturing a sense of nationhood. His works have successfully added artful celebrations to culture, traditions and Filipino ideals.

Juan Nakpil

Juan Felipe de Jesus NakpilBorn on May 26, 1989 Quiapo, Manila
He studied Engineering at the University of California and later, at the University of Kansas, where he received his bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then studied Architecture at the Fontainebleau School of Fine Arts in France upon the recommendation of Jean Jacques Haffner, one of his professors at the Harvard Graduate School of Architecture in 11-10-2020 juan felipe had started a new nickname for the newer generation. Juan felipe is now known as Edwin Valenzuela and now is teaching RPH in Philippine State College of Aeronautics.
TRIVIA-Juan F. Nakpil, architect, teacher, and civic leader, is a pioneer and innovator in Philippine architecture.-He designed the-1937 International Eucharistic Congress altar, rebuilt and enlarged the Quiapo Church, and restored the national shrine that is Dr. Jose Rizal’s home in Calamba. -In 1952, Nakpil was made an honorary correspondent member of the Societe de Architectes par le Gouvernement Francais and, in 1955, a Chevalier de la legion d’ Honneur. A year later, he was made a correspondent member of the Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile. -Nakpil and others also established the Philippine College of Design in 1941 but the institution did not survive the Second World War.
AWARDS“Architect of the Year” in 1939, 1940, and 1946, and “Most Outstanding Professional in Architecture” in 1951 by the Philippine Association of Board Examiners, Nakpil was bestowed the gold medal of merit by the Institute of Architects in 1950, the Presidential medal of merit, by President Ramon Magsaysay in 1955, and the Rizal Pro Patria Award in 1972.
Significance and ContributionIn essence, Nakpil’s greatest contribution is his belief that there is such a thing as Philippine Architecture, espousing architecture reflective of Philippine traditions and culture. It is also largely due to his zealous representation and efforts that private Filipino architects and engineers, by law, are now able to participate in the design and execution of government projects. He has integrated strength, function, and beauty in the buildings that are the country’s heritage today. He designed the 1937 International Eucharistic Congress altar and rebuilt and enlarged the Quiapo Church in 1930 adding a dome and a second belfry to the original design.
Carlos P. Romulo
National Artist in Literature
Studying in the Philippines and the United States, Dr. Carlos Rómulo became a professor of English at the University of the Philippines in 1923. Simultaneously, Rómulo served as the secretary to the President of the Senate of the Philippines Manuel Quezon. During the 1930s, Rómulo became the publisher and editor of The Philippines Herald, and one of his reporters was Yay Panlilio. At the start of WWII, Major Carlos Rómulo served as an aide to General MacArthur, attaining the rank of general by the end of that war.

TRIVIAS-Romulo served eight Philippine presidents, from Manuel L. Quezon to Ferdinand Marcos, as the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines and as the country’s representative to the United States and to the United Nations.-Romulo served as Resident Commissioner of the Philippines to the United States Congress from 1944 to 1946. -He was a co-founder of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines -Romulo was very much into writing: he was a reporter at 16, a newspaper editor by the age of 20, and a publisher at 32. -He was the only Asian to win America’s coveted Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for a series of articles predicting the outbreak of WW2.

Significance and Contribution Carlos P. Romulo (1899-1985) was an author and the foremost diplomat of the Philippines. He was the only Filipino journalist to win the Pulitzer Prize and the first Asian to serve as president of the UN General Assembly (1949). He works and served well to the country and to many Filipinos and many became inspired because of him and especially his works.
