The Past Perfect Simple

HAD + PAST PARTCICIPLE

USE

We use the past perfect to talk about...

the "earlier past", i.e. things that happened BEFORE the main event. It gives importance to the completion of the activity.

When I had finished school, I bought a ticket to travel round the world.

The Past Perfect Continuous

HAD + BEEN + VERB + ING

USE

We use the past perfect continuous to talk about...

longer continuous actions or situations that started BEFORE the main events. It gives importance to the DURATION of the activity.

I had been working for 12 months when I had the idea.

I was tired because I had been studying all night.

Past Perfect Continuous

Past perfect Simple

Longer continuous actions that started BEFORE the main events and continued up to that point. Auxiliary: HAD in + , - and ? forms. HAD + BEEN + verb -ING

The 'earlier past'. Actions that happened BEFORE the main event. Auxiliary: HAD in + , - and ? forms. HAD + *PAST PARTICIPLE *Past participle (-ed regular verbs; 3rd column irregular verbs)
