Definition

Object Personal Pronouns

A personal pronoun is a short word we use to substitute the proper name of a person (in the grammatical sense). Each of the English personal pronouns shows us: the grammatical person, gender, and number. (1)

me, you, him, her, it, us, and them.

info

Why we need personal pronouns?

Because they eliminate repetition within sentences.

Important information to consider

Subject Pronouns

A subject pronoun = a pronoun that takes the place of a noun as the subject of a sentence. Remember: Subject pronouns can be: - singular or plural - masculine, feminine, or gender neutral The masculine or feminine subject pronoun is used when gender is known; when referring to an inanimate object, the gender-neutral form “it” is used.

When do you need to use “it”:

  • animals of unspecified gender
  • baby of unknown gender
  • weather, temperature, or time.

Info

Object Pronouns

An object pronoun = a type of personal pronoun that is normally used as a grammatical object, either as the direct or indirect object of a verb, or as the object of a preposition. The seven basic pronouns take on different forms when used as object pronouns rather than as subject pronouns: I becomes Me You becomes You (tnis rule applies for singular and plural use) He becomes Him She becomes Her It becomes It We becomes Us They becomes Them (5)
