TERM 2 - CYCLE 5 TOPIC 5: SEPARATION OF MIXTURES

  1. A mixture is the combination of two or more substances, which retain their initial properties. These can be separated by various physical methods.
  2. Mixtures can be homogeneous, and heterogeneous.
  3. Heterogeneous: They are mixtures whose components can be easily identified.
  4. Homogeneous: They are mixtures in which its components cannot be identified. Its appearance is uniform.

WHAT IS A MIXTURE?

EVAPORATION:This method is used to separate homogeneous mixtures formed by solids and liquids. It consists of gently heating so that the liquid evaporates. In many parts of the world, table salt is obtained from the evaporation of sea water. The heat for the process comes from the sun.

METHODS FOR SEPARATING MIXTURES

This technique is used to separate heterogeneous mixtures of solids, and liquids. It consists of letting the mixture pass through a filter, the filter allows the pass of the liquid, and retains the solid particles.Other mixtures, like soil, have relatively large particle sizes, which can be filtered through something like a coffee filter.

FILTRATION

This method is used to separate homogeneous mixtures formed by liquids. Distillation is done in a instrument called a still. The mixture is heated in a container, and when it begins to boil the liquids separate.

DISTILLATION

It is a technique that is used to separate heterogeneous mixtures of solids. Is used to separed a dry mixture which contain subtances of different sizes by passing it through a sive.

SIEVING

This is a method used to separate liquids that do not dissolve in each other (such as water and oil) or insoluble solids in a liquid (such as water and sand).

DECANTATION

Is a process in which magnetically susceptible material is extracted from a mixture using a magnetic force. The separation is done by passing the magnet through the mixture so that the magnetic material adheres to it.
