Getting familiar with how the IELTS test works

01 What is IELTS?

International English Language Testing System IELTS is an English test that assesses your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. It helps you develop the kind of English you will need in everyday life whether you are at college, at work or talking to friends. There are two test types: IELTS Academic is for higher education or professional training. IELTS General Training is for secondary education, migration, work or training. The test is made up of:

You can choose either computer-delivered or paper-based IELTS for your Academic or General Training test. The only difference is for the Listening, Reading and Writing sections of your test, you can either type or write your answers. The choice is yours. The Speaking test is the same for both tests and is done face-to-face with a qualified IELTS Examiner.

Test takers who understand the format of IELTS are at an advantage. Make sure you’re familiar with how IELTS testing works. You’ll take the first three parts of the test on the same day, in the following order: Listening, Reading, and Writing (there are no breaks between these tests). Your Speaking test will be held either on the same day or seven days before or after that, depending on local arrangements.

  • Recording 1: a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 2: a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities
  • Recording 3: a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
  • Recording 4: a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture
