THE ABYSS

Pietro Canonica

THE ABYSS

The secret is in that abyss that has never been sculpted by Canonica, if not in the reflection of their gaze.

The work represents a man and a woman in an embrace that seems to merge them.

The woman's long hair seems to envelop the man

the description

The general impact is represented by the fear of the two young people kneeling on the ground, looking towards a common point.

The criticism frames the image of the two lovers as a representation of the passionate love that overwhelms and drags into its fatal vortex, the abyss.

The world is summed up in the couple and the passion overwhelms and cancels everything around the desire to be together and love each other.

This image for me represents the way we fall into the abyss of love

LITERARY REFERENCES

Critics of the time read us an allegory of passionate love, others a more literary reference to Paolo and Francesca.

Often in contemporary art, the artist's aim, in fact, is precisely to make the observer participate in his own work.

ARTISTIC CURRENTS

Canonica was part of three artistic currents: Modern art: experimenting with new, more realistic visual forms Naturalism: it was characterized by the representation of subjects, human and otherwise.
