The Crucible

An example of how friendship is shown in this story is how Abigail betrays Tituba. Abigail and Tituba were friends, but when a situation dealing with life or death comes along, Abigail throws Tituba under the bus. Situations can also be found, although not so life threatening, throughout a typical high school.

Reverend Parris saw all the girls in the forest dancing naked and his servant Tituba. Before he came most of the girls ran in fear of being seen. Betty and Abigail were the ones who had got caught.

“Abigail: She made me do it! She made Betty do it! Tituba, shocked and angry: Abby! Abigail: She makes me drink blood! Parris: Blood!! Mrs. Putnam: My baby’s blood? Tituba: No, no, chicken blood. I give her chicken blood!” - Page Numbers 234 to 240

In this event after Rev. Paris spotting Abigail and Betty dancing in the woods, Abigail scares the girls so they will not speak the truth ever. Abigail said "And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I willbring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you..."

He confesses his affair with her and explains that Elizabeth fired her when she discovered it. He claims that Abigail wants Elizabeth to hang so that she can take her place in his home. This doesn't really help him or anyone else since when Elizabeth was asked about it, trying to protect her husband and unaware of the situation, she says no.

Elizabeth prompts John to reveal Abigail is not telling the truth after Mary tells them that Abigail is acussing people of doing witchcraft including Elizabeth. She knowns she brought her named so she can get with John, her husband. Elizabeth makes an allusion to the affair Proctor had with Abigail, and catches him in a lie, he told her he was not alone with Abigail at the Parris home, but in fact he was.

Danforth demands the confession as proof to the village of Proctor’s witchcraft. Proctor refuses to allow him to nail the paper with his name on the church door and, after arguing with the magistrates, tears the confession in two and renounces it. He is than sentence to death by hanging. ale and Parris plead with Elizabeth to remonstrate with Proctor, but she refuses to sway him from doing what he believes is just.

  • They come to the house looking for proof that Elizabeth is guilty and are suspecious about there being poppets in the house. Elizabeth says she has no poppets other than the one that Mary gave her that very day. Upon inspection, Mary’s doll is shown to have a needle stuck in its center. Earlier that day, Abigail said she had been stuck with a needle.

Mary testifies she made the poppet, then the girls turn on her. The girls accuse Mary of bewitching them with a cold wind. They keep pressuring her and screaming that Mary is sending spirits at them until it is too much for Mary. John Proctor tries to get her to her senses but ia too late. She calls him the devil's made and acuses him of force her to do devil work with him.
