Historically the word "bee" has been used to describe a get together for comunal work like a husking bee or an Apple bee. The word bee meaning "help given my neighbors"

The Annual United States National Spelling Bee was started in 1925 by the Courier-journal. The winner was Frank Neuhauser who won the 1st National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. at the age of eleven

In 1941 the Scripps Howard News Service acquired sponsorship of the program, later the name was changed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Spellings are anually held for local levels up to the Scripps National Spelling bee contest which awards a cash prize to the winner.
