The challenge of integration.
Nowadas we are used to hearing the word "migration". But what does that mean? Why do people migrate? Are they accepted regardless their religion or skin color? What does Europe do to help?
Definition.
To get a better understanding on this phenomenon we must get a better undertaning of the word itself. The Cambridge Dictionary defines this word as "The process of people travelling to a new place to live, usually in large numbers". But that is not the only term to define these episodes. in fact we also use immigration and emigratios. Then, what is the difference between those three terms? Emigrate is from the point of view of the departure. Immigrate is from the point of view of the destination. Migrate is all about the moving.
The economic side of migration.
The migration causes different economic impacts in the population. When someone migrates it is usually to live a better life, which also means finding a stable job. An higher income means a major use of the marketing, wheter it is for selling or buying. Furthermore some believe that migration causes the occupation of different jobs, which might impact the citizien of the country, causing them the need to move in order to find a new job. This is actually wrong, as many economists have proved that, even though they do occupy different regions of various jobs they still contribute to the economy of the country. So the fact that "they take our jobs" as many says is not necesserally a negative aspect.
Integration policies.
Since 2012, newly arrived immigrants have been obligated to sign the so-called Integration Agreement when they obtain their first residence permit. By doing so, they commit to achieving specific integration goals in the following two years. Achievement is determined through a credits system assessing sufficient knowledge of the Italian language (A2), constitution, civic life and institutions. ☑ language course ☑ civic education ☑ vocational training The fulfilment of integration goals is required for the renewal of permits. Several categories of migrants are, however, exempted from this requirement, either by law (victims of trafficking, unaccompanied minors, disabled migrants) or de facto, since their permits cannot be withdrawn (beneficiaries of international or humanitarian protection, family migrants, long term residents, relatives of EU citizens).
Migration and development.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes that migration is a powerful driver of sustainable development, for migrants and their communities. It brings significant benefits in the form of skills, strengthening the labour force, investment and cultural diversity, and contributes to improving the lives of communities in their countries of origin through the transfer of skills and financial resources.
The benefits of migration should not be seen only from the perspective of what migrants can bring to any given territory. The relationship between migration and sdevelopment is much more complex: the political, social and economic processes of potential destination countries will also determine how, where and when migration occurs. If migration is poorly governed, it can also negatively impact on development.
